Why Online Magazines for Kids are a Great Idea

Hersman Girls - Already on Computers...Good parents are always looking for ways to stimulate the minds of their children. Before their children can even talk in full sentences, many moms and dads read books to their babies and toddlers. Parents know that the key to an intelligent, well-educated child is reading.

Children’s magazines are wonderful for fostering an inquisitive atmosphere in your home. A child who might not pick up a book on a particular topic may be introduced to it through an article in his favorite magazine. These magazines are wonderful for encouraging reluctant readers and broadening the literary tastes of a child. The interesting stories and colorful pictures in a non-fiction magazine article will attract even children that only like fiction stories.

In an effort to stimulate a child’s curiosity, many parents purchase subscriptions to monthly children’s magazines. These magazines capitalize on the excitement that many children display when receiving mail. Yet, many parents don’t realize that many children’s magazines have corresponding websites accessible to children. Allowing your child to access online kids’ magazines is a great idea for many reasons.

Four Reasons that Online Magazines are Great for Kids

1. No Cost

The content of most magazine websites is accessible for absolutely no charge. If you have had to cut back your child’s magazine subscriptions due to a tight budget, your child can still look at much of the same content on many of his favorite magazine websites.  And now you can add much more variety, again at zero cost.

Many magazine websites have fun, interactive activities for children that are available only on the website. These may include slide shows, learning games, puzzles or videos that correspond to published articles. Try highlightskids.com for tic tac row for your little ones, complete with colorful characters to reinforce their play.

3. Complementary Information and Articles

Many times kids’ magazine websites offer extra articles and corresponding links about topics covered in the print version. The cost is high for publishing an article in a print magazine. If an editor has two or three articles about a similar topic, she will decide to put the best one in the print version of the magazine. Yet, since she still has a few additional articles that emphasize different aspects of that topic, many times she will choose to publish those articles on the website. Your child can learn about all of the facets of a particular topic by exploring the magazine’s web-version — check out kids.nationalgeographic.com for hours of discovery.

Suppose your ten-year-old is interested in the upcoming presidential election. In searching for accurate election news, he may want to look at adult news sites. You may have two problems with this. First, the articles on traditional news sites may be written at a level that will be difficult for him to understand. Second, he will probably be exposed to other news stories in his search that may be inappropriate for his viewing at such a young age. Reading headlines about kidnapping and violence might cause your child unnecessary anxiety.

By allowing your child to explore a kids’ news magazine site, such as timeforkids.com, your child’s curiosity can be satisfied at a level that he will understand, and you won’t have to worry that he will be exposed to scary or inappropriate information.

By using the websites associated with your child’s favorite magazines, you can be comfortable knowing that all of the content is safe and reliable. Your child will be excited about exploring the games and activities available to him in this unique format. The best part is that all of this is available to you and your child instantly, and completely free of charge.
