Kids on Board – Winter Car Safety Tips

commuting to workHere in Ohio, winter weather driving is something that simply must be done. Unfortunately, there’s no way around it and driving through several feet of snow is not uncommon. As such, we’re used to readying our cars for the season to ensure our family’s safety. Whether this is your first winter weather driving season or your twentieth, here are some great tips to make sure that you and the kids are as safe as possible in the car.

Check Your Insurance

Many people sign an insurance policy and never think of it again. Winter is a great time to take a new look at your policy and be sure that your coverage is adequate. Thanks to snow and ice on the roads, accidents are more likely to occur in the winter and you’ll want to make sure that your insurance is up to par.

My day...Roadside Assistance

If you have a newer vehicle, you may have received roadside assistance as a part of your loan package. If your vehicle is older, or you were not offered the coverage with your loan, consider adding roadside assistance to your insurance policy or join a company like AAA. While it may be safe to change your own tire in warmer months, you’ll not want to try to do the same on an icy road.

Tune-Up

Before the winter weather sets in, get your car tuned up. Have your fluid levels topped off, hoses and electrical components checked and your oil changed. Get your tires rotated if need be or have snow tires put on. Making sure your car is road ready is one of the best things you can do to ensure your kids’ safety.

Emergency Kit

Prepare an emergency kit for your car. A backpack, carry on bag or a plastic tote will make wonderful containers. Pack a few blankets, a sweatshirt for every member of the family, bottled water, granola or energy bars, matches, a candle or two, flares, emergency signage, a flashlight, batteries, hats and gloves. This list is in no way inclusive; pack anything you feel may be necessary should you break down on the side of the road.

Seat Belts

While it may seem like common sense, you’d be surprised at how many people do not wear seat belts nor make their children wear them. Now is the time to get into this good habit. People in accidents are saved by seat belts every day! If your child is outgrowing a car or booster seat, consider waiting until the spring to move them onto the next step.

Dress Properly

While it may be tempting to heat the car and leave the coats at home, skip the temptation. Your car may be nice and toasty sitting in your driveway but what if you get into an accident or break down? Chances are you’ll need to shut off the engine, which means no heat to your vehicle. Hypothermia can set in more quickly than you think so bundle up! You can always let the kids take off their coats once they’re in the car.

If you have to drive for more than a few minutes, consider packing entertainment for the kid. Small children can get bored in the car very quickly and bored children are distracting. You’ll need all of your attention on the road in the winter! Keeping the kids entertained in the back seat will keep them out of your hair and allow you to focus on your driving.

Take it from someone that knows: winter weather driving can be safe! While nothing can take the stress out of driving through a blizzard, knowing that you are prepared for a roadside emergency should take the edge off. You may not be able to stay home and out of the weather but you can make sure that you and your family are as safe as possible on the road.
