Journey Into Self Employment – Starting Out on Your Own

Every blog I read has a focus on a certain topic for each month.  I have been struggling with what I want to make my topics.  I want to provide information that is useful and gives back to you (my reader).  I am not sure what value I have to offer, or if I have any value to add at all.  I think I might know what my topic should be – “The Journey to Re-Starting Out as a Small Business Owner”.

I have been doing a lot of soul searching since I lost my job and trying to determine what next step I want to take.  My first tip toe in the water was acquiring this blog.   Although, I am not sure if I describe myself as a blogger.  I enjoy sharing and writing, but some days I feel blocked and not sure whether what I have to say is of any value.

I apologize if this post is boring or not what you were expecting, but I needed to ramble around for awhile to allow my ideas to sink in.  One thing I know for sure, I have to be passionate about what I am doing.  I want to feel good about what I have done at the end of the day.  I am passionate about helping people, finding ways to motivate them and help them achieve their dreams.

Some days I feel like a Jane of all Trades – Master of NONE.  I can’t describe my skills in one paragraph or even one page.  I can’t say that I know absolutely everything there is to know about any one topic.  I don’t consider myself an authority in any area.

The things that I do feel strongly about and feel like I can add value are in two areas -

  1. Animals – care and behavior.  I ran my own in home pet sitting business for over 11 years, not to mention the numerous pets I have had during my lifetime.  I have studied animal behavior, worked with abused animals, and cared for over 300+ different animals in my lifetime.  Cats, dogs, horses, guinea pigs, rabbits, fish….  the list goes on and on (nothing undomesticated of course, except the occasional squirrel).  My friends have commonly referred to me as a “Horse Whisperer” and even “St Francis”.  I feel most at home with animals and my daughter is already showing signs of love for animals.  But what does that mean for a career?
  2. Running a small business – I loved my business and would like to run my own again.  Due to a relocation and now being a mom of a special needs three year old, pet sitting is out of the question.  In taking an inventory of my skills, what do I bring to the table that would make another business as successful as my previous?  I am a great listener.  I am known for always having a creative solution to any problem.  My mind is always thinking of better or even new ways to get a job done.  Just because something seems impossible, doesn’t mean that it is.  My motto has been “if at first you don’t succeed, Try Try Try again!”  (Thanks mom!)  During my time as a Marketing Manager for an online baby clothes company, I learned some great new skills to promote small businesses online.

So as a result of this rambling – I have decided to start a series once a week on Re-Starting Out On Your Own!  I hope it proves to be motivational for anyone wanting to run their own business, but don’t know how.  I promise to share the good, the bad, and the ugly!  So here it goes….

Feel free to share any tips or advice for my journey…  I am all ears!
