Blogher 2011 Blues
Are you one of the bloggers who weren’t able to attend Blogher 2011? I am and I HATE it! Conferences are so much fun and a great way to network. During my short time in blogging, I have attended two conferences – Blissdom 2011 and Type A Mom (now Type A Parent). It never ceases to amaze me to see so much talent in one place, it is a little daunting. Everyone has a unique idea and has managed to make it their own. One of my favorite things to do at conferences is talk to people about their blogs or businesses – hearing their passion and dreams is exhilarating – almost like a drug.
As I am watching the streams from Blogher, I am picturing the hundreds of bloggers all sitting together at their laptops, smart phones, or even Ipads gleaning information from the speakers and each other. Seeing the smiles, hugs, and exclamations of surprise to finally meet the person face to face whom they have been following online. Business is being discussed and ideas are shared, but most of all bonds are being formed. All of this energy in one place is palpable and contagious!
Many of my friendships have come from conference attendees. I remember the excitement of meeting those online contacts face to face for the first time – Wondering what they look like? How do they sound? Are they who I picture in my mind? It is like a rush of adrenaline, when you find that one person who you have been dying to meet – almost as if you had just found a lost treasure hidden in a sea of people.
But as daunting and overwhelming as the conferences seem, I was always surprised at how approachable and friendly EVERYONE was. I could be having a discussion with one of the most influential bloggers and not even know until I got back to my room to see their blog. Blogging has created its own secret society that non-bloggers can’t understand. Dreams, hopes, fears, and even advice are shared for all to see, but only a few connect with the writer. Those connections are what keep me coming back to learn more, meet more people like me. After attending events, I feel so empowered and feel like I can accomplish anything.
So, as I sit here watching those streams go by of everyone having fun, meeting, and discussing where to go next – I am fighting the urge to jump the next flight to San Diego!!! Watching the stream is my hershey kiss of chocolate for now, but the big chocolate bar is waiting just out of reach *Sigh* (Don’t need the calories anyway!) Off to watch more tweets…..
How do you feel about missing conferences? Do you feel empowered after attending one?

I haven’t been to a conference yet – we haven’t had many here in Oz. But there was one in Melbourne last weekend. I happened to be tweeting on the Friday night and I noticed that someone had the brilliant idea of setting up a special hashtag for those of us who weren’t there. So I had to columns in my Tweetdeck side by side. One for the conference tweets – nnb2011 – and the other for the wannabes – NoNNB. It was great!
