Advice for the Newly Graduated

Seeing all the Graduation day cards, reminds me of my graduation many (many, many) years ago.  Wow, how things have changed?  If only I had known then, what I know now.  If I were asked to talk to a group of students, what would I say?  What lessons have I learned?

These are the ten things I would like to pass on:

  1. Be true to yourself. Follow your own path.
  2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.  It takes courage and strength to admit when you need help.
  3. Learn from your mistakes, don’t dwell on them.  Use them as a stepping stone.  All the trials of life are necessary to prepare you for the life ahead.
  4. You will run into a lot of people who don’t have your vision, don’t let the naysayers get in your way.
  5. Be flexible and ready for change, life is full of it.
  6. Always savor the beautiful moments in life, they will help you get through the tough times ahead.  Life is a journey, not a destination.
  7. Don’t let society define your success, find your own success and create your own definition.
  8. Build a network of people you can depend on for support.
  9. Always remember those who have helped you and show gratitude.
  10. Be charitable, you never know.  The person you help today, could be the person who will help you tomorrow.

Lastly, the best advice I got when I was graduating – “Always wear sunscreen!“  I never understood why this was so important, until now.

Congratulations to the class of 2011!
