Advice for the Newly Graduated
Seeing all the Graduation day cards, reminds me of my graduation many (many, many) years ago. Wow, how things have changed? If only I had known then, what I know now. If I were asked to talk to a group of students, what would I say? What lessons have I learned?
These are the ten things I would like to pass on:
- Be true to yourself. Follow your own path.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It takes courage and strength to admit when you need help.
- Learn from your mistakes, don’t dwell on them. Use them as a stepping stone. All the trials of life are necessary to prepare you for the life ahead.
- You will run into a lot of people who don’t have your vision, don’t let the naysayers get in your way.
- Be flexible and ready for change, life is full of it.
- Always savor the beautiful moments in life, they will help you get through the tough times ahead. Life is a journey, not a destination.
- Don’t let society define your success, find your own success and create your own definition.
- Build a network of people you can depend on for support.
- Always remember those who have helped you and show gratitude.
- Be charitable, you never know. The person you help today, could be the person who will help you tomorrow.
Lastly, the best advice I got when I was graduating – “Always wear sunscreen!“ I never understood why this was so important, until now.
Congratulations to the class of 2011!
