Summer Activities for Children on a Budget – Fancy Tea Party

So, the school year (well preschool) has come to a close and the kids are going bonkers already. I decided to think outside the box and come up with some cheap yet fun ideas to keep us busy!
My daughter loves to go down to my office and get things off of the printer, so on Monday I printed something special for her to pick up. I couldn’t help but smile as she came running up saying, “The girls are so pretty and are having tea!” I had printed up an invitation with a picture (she is 3 and can’t read) to her very own tea party.
In planning our menu for the tea, we decided on homemade scones so they could help. Together we planned the invitation list. It was so fun to watch the joy on her little face in being a part of the planning phase. Baby and RaffRaff were consulted and agreed that they were free for tea that morning. So the guest list was set.
Now, we had to get dressed. Not just regular day dressed, but FANCY for our tea. Now, I own one dress, it is from way before I had babies. You know the kind I am talking about, the one that you never wear in public. I can barely walk in heels, but I only have one pair of shoes to go with the dress and they are heels. For the sake of the kids, I dusted them off and wore them proudly.
Everyone one knows that no tea party is complete without hats, now that might be a problem. I only have a sun hiking hat and several random baseball hats. So sun hat, it was. Not so sure I could pull of the baseball cap and I am sure my daughter would have noticed the difference. My little girl decided on a princess dress and her Fancy Nancy crown. I remembered a hand-me down blazer (about 2 sizes too big) that my son wore, complete with is polo and crocs! We all looked lovely!
Fancy china tea pots and plastic tea cups from my daughter’s play set, we were all set for our fine tea party. The party began and we all had a ball eating scones, drinking real tea (Strawberry Kiwi with honey and milk), and being fancy! We even had our little pinkies stuck out in the air as we sipped from our little plastic cups, we were the picture of a perfect southern tea party!
As for the rest of the summer, we have several other things planned. I plan to surprise my little girl with the same spur of the moment invite on the printer. The best part is that we are still able to stay on budget.
- A trip to the zoo (we have a membership, so it is free!)
- A picnic near the train tracks in a local town so that my train loving boy can see a real Choo-choo
- An art session in the park.
Summer can be fun and not cost a lot. Have tons of fun this summer!!
