Women Make History and Why?

I recently saw a bumper sticker that made me stop and think – “Well behaved women, rarely make history.”  This is so true!  Don’t get me wrong I am not talking about getting into trouble or being thrown in jail, I am referring to those women who aren’t afraid to speak out or change society’s definition of themselves.  The women of the past risked their lives, blazed trails, and experienced even tougher obstacles than we can ever imagine.  Today, women are reaping the benefits of these changes and even making new ones of their own.  We are learning to embrace our differences and use them to create our own empires.

If you look back through history, many of the women who are recognized were rebels.  They were able to make changes through their actions, whether it was speaking out publicly or risking their lives for their cause.  Joan of Arc, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Mother Teresa, Amelia Earhart, Annie Oakley and so many more – all of these women made history.   What made them stand out?  What was their driving force?

Messages to women in the past have been – be a good wife, don’t make a scene, be polite – heck be a debutante!  Women were expected to take care of their husbands, children and home.  They visited the local community centers and volunteered their time to the church.  A woman was defined by her ability to be a good mother, wife and leader in her community.

Today the messages are a little different, but still steeped in these stereotypical roles.  Some of the messages being sent out today are that women need to be beautiful to be powerful and even turn away from their nurturing side to fight side by side with men.  If they want to be a corporate giant, they need to give up family or hire someone to take care of them.  Almost as if they are saying we need to give up being women and be just like a man, to succeed.

From one drastic change to another, but I think things are starting to level out.  The women who made history and the women who made great mothers, all have one thing in common – HEART.  I believe that is what drives us to make necessary changes for our families and communities.  Heart is the what made the women of the past stand out and is still what makes women of today stand out.  Historically women have stepped up to keep things moving when men were away at war.  Even today with the economic downturn, jobs are scarce and some women have taken over the role of breadwinner.  We do whatever is necessary to take care of our families and aren’t afraid to make waves.  Blogging has opened up the world to more women who have this urge to make a difference.  Ask any company, mom bloggers are becoming the avenue of choice for their brands.  They are wielding the power in a previously man dominated world.  Why?  Heart!

It is my belief that when we let our hearts take over, we can move mountains.  Passion is the fuel that moves everything ahead.  I just recently sat through a social media conference, over 20 hours of listening to all the top social media experts talk about what it takes to succeed.  One main message resonated through out all 20 hours – Be real!  Be authentic!  Genuinely care about your customers!  Listen to their needs!  I am so glad to hear that this is where companies are going.  I am tired of “it’s a dog eat dog world”, where does that leave our society?  What happened to community?  I am glad to hear that companies want to hear what we need and not tell us what they think we need.

Time are changing!  I am excited to see this focus on community and listening.  More and more women are coming to the forefront in social media, because they are historically better listeners.  They listen with their HEART!

What do you think?  Do you agree with me?  Do you lead with your heart?  When was the last time you felt so strongly about something that no one could stop you?  What was the outcome?

  • WOO HOO! Way to go! Now this has got me excited to be a women living during this amazing time of blogging and women stepping forward to do what they are passionate about.
I totally agree with you on having heart. I think that we can change the world no matter what we do as long as we have strong convictions about it .
However, I do not think that we should down play the women who are passionate and have heart about being behind the scenes to raise up strong boys and girls that will impact the world. Not being seen and heard does not mean a women is not making ripples and major waves in history.

Good point! Thanks for sharing this point of view. I agree that mothers make a huge impact in how they raise their children as well. The responsibility for the future of our children is a hard and very rewarding job. I would even say that you are heard and seen by your target group, your children!
