Birthday Party Idea – Tips for Making a Dessert Table
Before my daughter Skylar turned 1, I started browsing the internet looking for party ideas for her first birthday. I kind of knew what I wanted, but didn’t really know exactly how to present it. That is when I first discovered the art of dessert tables. Yes, I call it an art. Some of the dessert tables actually take my breath away. I know that may sound silly, but there are some photos of dessert tables out there that mix just the perfect amount of colors, with the perfect kind of snacks and desserts, on perfect little platters or glassware, and it all looks absolutely beautiful together that I actually gasp for air and say “Wow, that is stunning!” Thus my obsession for dessert tables started, which led to my obsession with blogs, which led to my obsession with party planning. Actually, I have always enjoyed planning parties, so maybe that is what truly started the whole spiraling effect. But either way, I am grateful for what has transpired, because I now have my own personal blog and in addition to that, a small business that makes me smile.
But back to the topic that I truly enjoy talking about, writing about, or reading about… dessert tables. While I am no Amy Atlas, who is the queen of dessert tables and someone who I really admire and look up to, here are some of my personal tips for creating a dessert table (keep in mind, I always try to keep a low budget when throwing my parties!)
- Start with the colors. Whether you have a specific theme in mind or just want to do something fun or elegant, try to think of 2-3 colors that complement each other and stick to those colors. Since I make my own party printables, this part is extremely important for me because all of my designs will be focused on these colors.
- Use platters or containers that are simple and can be used repeatedly for other dessert table themes. I love using simple white plates or cake stands, and glass jars or apothecary jars. Also, if you don’t have enough platters for all of your dessert choices, don’t immediately run to the store to buy new plates. Ask a friend or family member who might be willing to let you borrow a few plates. For Skylar’s 2nd birthday, I had a lot of desserts on my dessert table and was very fortunate that my sister has some platters she let me borrow. But I always keep a lookout for simple white plates whenever I go shopping and just in the past few months I’ve built a good collection of dessert table platters without breaking the bank!
- Speaking of bank, try to stick to a budget. If you are able to make some of the treats yourself, that can save you money. However, if you would rather save on time, then plan to spend a little extra for someone else to make your goodies. Also, keep in mind who your guests will be. If you are planning a party where most of your guests have a mature taste, then you might want to spend more on fine desserts. If you are planning a party where most of your guests just eat the frosting part of the cupcakes, then you might want to consider buying or making simpler treats.
- Personalize your dessert table. I love putting something special on a dessert table that only my family can call their own. For example, for my children’s birthday parties, I usually have their pictures or their name all over the table or even a special toy.
- Use desserts you actually like! I know sometimes I get carried away with a specific theme or color scheme, but in the end, you have to eat the desserts on your dessert table! Pick out desserts that you and your guests will actually enjoy eating, because ultimately, your goal as a dessert table “artist” is for your guests to eat the art.

There is something so inviting to a well appointed party table which I do not have a knack for, lol. I have a friend who can make the best tables out of things she finds right at the dollar store! I love that you turned your obsession into a party planning business- isn’t that how Martha Stewart got started??

I also LOVE using dollar store finds on a dessert table. It’s nice to know that a pretty dessert table doesn’t have to be an expensive one. Thanks so much for your comment Lisa!
