Seeking Shelter from Life’s Storms
As a wife and stay-at-home mother to 4 children ranging from toddler to teens, my life is incredibly overwhelming. There’s laundry to be folded, dinner to be made, children who need to be picked up from track practice and an inevitable toddler meltdown on the horizon at any given moment of every single day.
Much like a storm, the pressures of motherhood and marriage often overtake me. Dark clouds of never-ending responsibilities come rolling in; drenching me in a laundry list of deadlines, obligations and expectations. The ever-changing needs of my family toss me about like gale-force winds; leaving me lost, unsure of my direction. During times like these, I often feel beat and utterly spent. Try as I might, the storm continues to rage.
But just when I think I’ve had enough – when I’ve grown weary of being drenched in deadlines, obligations and expectations – hope arrives in the form of my children.
A sweet smile, kind word or a great big hug from my children is all it takes for the sun to shine down on me once more. Their youthful spirit warms me to the core and reminds me that this life is so much more than just a bunch of deadlines, obligations and expectations. They remind me that…
Life can certainly be messy at times, but boy is it sweet. Sometimes, the messy clean up is worth the memorable moment.
Mealtimes are a great time to come together and reconnect as a family. Despite our often busy schedules, I find great joy in being together as a family. Chatting it up about work and school and life at home doesn’t sound like anything grand, but it’s the coming together that’s really a blessing.
Having a clean home is nowhere near as important as having a happy home. Some things are more important than folding the laundry, like building Lego towers with the kids.
Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. No matter how planned-out I prefer things to be, there are times when you just have to toss that good old to-do list out the window and go with the flow.
It’s important to stop and appreciate the little things. Toddlers are experts when it comes to appreciating the little things in life. My 2-year old can’t help but stop and bend down to take in the beauty of every little flower she passes by. If only we all took the time to notice the beauty around us.
Even the smallest accomplishments are worthy of being celebrated. Whether it’s getting straight “A’s” on their report cards or finally learning to tie their shoes, each and every milestone and accomplishment is worth being celebrated.
No matter how difficult and overwhelming the climb, there’s beauty in the journey itself. Life is filled with deadlines, obligations and expectations and can be incredibly overwhelming at times, but if we just stop and take a moment to appreciate the journey, we’ll surely find the beauty in it all.
Throughout my life, I’ll continue to deal with storms. But there’s hope on the horizon; rays of sunshine that warm my heart and bring things back into perspective.
Reminding me that this life is so much more than just a bunch of deadlines, obligations and expectations.
How do you seek shelter from the storms in your life?
