An Economic Holiday

By Megan M., Staff Writer, All A Bunch of Momsense (@TaxMegan)

The holidays can be completely overwhelming. Even without some of the economic challenges so many are facing, the urge to spend, to get the biggest and best for those we love, can put a real crunch on our wallets. The glitz and sparkle of it all can blind us to some simple truths.

For me, the holidays are about family; spending time with those I love. Laughing together over old stories that are only funny to us. Crying over an old, pink Tupperware bowl given as a gift. Sharing, loving, enjoying.

I hope to develop that same love of family in my kids. To instill in them the idea that these celebrations are about togetherness and not about the gifts. To reinforce to them that the best gifts are not necessarily the biggest, most expensive toys, but the things that come from our hearts.

This year, our giving will be limited. Not because it’s what I want to do, because I do love to give, but because we have to. My children and I will make a number of our gifts ourselves. We’ll use this time together to make memories, while putting little pieces of ourselves in that which we give to those we love.

And you know what?

I can’t wait.

Has the economy impacted how you plan to do gifts this season? If you do homemade gifts, what kinds of things are favorites of yours to give? (I need great ideas!)
