I Blog, U Blog

by Brook, Contributor, Baby & Sofia (@babyandsofia)

In August 2008, my husband, Giuseppe, and I moved from Naples, Italy to Newport Beach, California. The hubs had just graduated from veterinary school and had accepted a position as an intern at a radiology clinic. I had also just finished graduate school, with an MA in Human Relations. While I was not ready to leave our charmed Italian life, we were excited to start our new American adventure.  And besides, Giuseppe had his heart set on practicing in the United States, so we were going, ready or not.

We landed in California and were immediately off and running. Giuseppe starting working three days later.  I moved us into our new home; it took me about a month to find a job.  The next few months flew by with one constant: we were both pretty homesick – Giuseppe’s family is in Naples and my family lives in Honolulu.  One of my brothers lives in San Diego, so we cherished any time that he could come up and spend  with us.  But, we still felt a little isolated.

When we found out that I was pregnant in February 2009, we were so thrilled.  Finding out I was pregnant was probably the happiest day of our lives.  And we spent the next couple of weeks on our phones with all of our friends and family spread out across the globe.  I quickly realized that I needed a more efficient way to communicate with our loved ones.

So I started a blog, something I really knew nothing about. I had really only ever read two blogs before: Dooce.com and a design blog that a co-worker authored.  I looked into the different platforms and decided that I liked WordPress the best.  I chose my blog’s name: baby&sofia.  (Baby because I was growing one, and Sofia because she is our lovable pup.)  And I started off very simply, with short posts about what was going on with us out in California and the quirks of a first pregnancy.

I quickly learned two things. One, blogging is addictive.  Whenever something funny or exciting happened, I would immediately think about posting.  Any great photo became the perfect shot for baby&sofia. And two, there is a giant community of like-minded mommy bloggers out there. I had no idea!  Blogs quickly became a great wealth of information and entertainment for me.  Women write about every topic, often with great wit and charm.  I felt so lucky to have found this community, and still do.

My blog has become not only a great way to stay in touch with all of our friends and family, but an amazing way to connect with other moms, bloggers, and writers.  I truly stumbled upon this community by accident, and couldn’t be happier.  My blog is now a part of our lives, and I think it is a good, accurate reflection of us.

So, that is why I blog.

Why do you blog? What got you started and how has it changed?
