Blankies For Life?

By Shandal, Contributor, My Life In 3D, (@Shandal)

For any new mamas out there, I have two words for you… security blanket.

It may be a blanket, a bear or even a blanket that has a bear head stitched to the middle of it.  Both of my kids have blankets and they LOVE them!  They’ve been a life saver several times, especially when we travel, go to the doctor, and at bedtime.

I personally never had one.  The closest I ever got to one was Linus’ blankie on Charlie Brown.

Charlie Brown, Peanuts

To be honest, I don’t know how I’ve survived life this long without having my own when I was a kid.  I even wonder sometimes if I wouldn’t be so insecure today if I had one when I was younger.

One thing to beware of…your baby might grow so attached to it that they will sleep with it even into their adult years.  I have a relative, who will remain anonymous, who is in her twenties and still sleeps with one.  I think most of her close friends and family know this secret, but I don’t want to “out” her on the internet, so that’s all I’ll say.

My oldest child is 3 1/2 years old and he still asks for his to sleep with at night. He doesn’t lug it around with him during the day, but there’s no telling how long he will keep it.

Confession time, do YOU still have your blankie???

  • I still have my blanket from when I was a child. It’s pink so I hope I have a girl one day to wrap her in it. It was never a security blanket for me but I love having it for nostalgia. Not sure how I would deal with my child being attached to one.

  • I do not have a blanket but I’m pretty sure my daughter will be taking all three of her “lulu”s {Angel Dear pink poodle blankets with heads} to college with her. But she has been an awesome sleeper since 12 weeks when we put her first Lulu in bed with her. Our real problem started when she found the back ups and now demands all three. ;)

    • Oh that’s too funny she found the backups! We lost our backup for our son’s. Not even sure they make the same one anymore. Crossing fingers the one he has doesn’t get lost. That could be an issue! lol

  • I still have my blankey. My son is attached to his sleep sacks in the same way, which worries me, because he can grow out of them.

  • I don’t but my kids sure do. For Little Miss (6) its a very worn brown teddy bear. She can’t sleep without him! For Mr Happy (4) its a pink (!) blanket. I made it for baby girl and then used it in his cot when he came along. Somehow he has become very attached, and can’t sleep without it! I wonder how long it will last…

    • My husband would probably have a hard time accepting our son having a pink blanket. If he did I don’t think he would say anything, but I’m sure he’d have a hole in his tongue from biting it so hard. LOL Some men are silly about that!

  • Mama P:

I never had a blanket, I had a bear, unfortunately it was taken from me:(

I have blankie babies though, I have 3 yr old, 18 month old, and 2 week old, all three of them have blankets. The baby doesn’t really care but the older two do not go anywhere or do anything without thier blankets. My three year old can put his down, and be okay as long as he knows it’s with us, but my 18 month old drags his everywhere, I have to wash the poor thing almost every other day, and that is a task, let me tell ya lol.

    • Our kids are pretty much the same age! I’m thinking that both of my kids were about 4-6 months old when they really were attached to their blankie deals. I still don’t know what the name for those things are. LOL I was actually just looking through old pictures and I just can’t believe what my oldest’s blankie used to look like! Even the color has changed a lot. I had forgot what it looked like when it was still new. hehe

  • This is funny because I recently blogged about my “baby pillow” and baby blanket I had from the day i came home from the hospital (I am 41 years old now!). You can read my post here:

  • My blankie was thing and had a sunshine on the corner and was called “sunshine blankie”. When I got married my mother gave it to me. It has been lost in a move some how.

My children have each had a blankie. My oldest, now 21, called her’s Tada… which took us awhile to figure out why. We used to play peek a boo with her and then say Ta DA! when we “found” her.
My son had a yellow thermal blankie with satin. His was dubbed Wubbie… it went everywhere. He sucked his thumb with his little hand wrapped in satin.
My youngest daughter had “cartoon blanket” it was hand made with stitched characters from around the world. She is 17 now. She still has it.

My youngest child is only one. He has several blankets and bears but as of yet he hasn’t attached himself to a specific one. I know he will, I just await the day and to find out what it’s name is. :)

    • Awe I love your little background stories! Such great names! My son’s is a lamb and it’s name is “Lambo”. My daughter’s is a bear and it’s original name was “Snuggie Bear”. Then became “Nuggie Bear”. Now it’s just “Nuggie”. Hehe

  • I didn’t have a blanket, but I had a cabbage patch doll named Jenny that I slept with until about 12 and she is still in my basement! I’m pretty sad that my son is wanting to give up his lovey though. He’s only 2 and that has been his best friend! :-(

    • I still have 2 of my cabbage patch dolls, but they are at my grandparent’s house. My daughter loves playing with them when we go over there to visit. :) I hear ya being sad about that… another sign that he’s growing up too fast! :(

  • I do have a blankie that I’m quite fond of and when we go on vacation I take it with me. It wasn’t something I had when I was little but I’ve just grown attached. Both of my children have blankies. My daughter has 3 things: blankie, paci, and teddy bear…even big brother know not to mess with the big 3!

  • I actually slept with a blanket until I was 13 years old. But then I went to camp one summer and lost it. I was devastated. The blanket was so ripped up and torn but I loved that thing.

My mom tried to buy a replacement, but it wasn’t the same. Blankie where are you?!

  • I never had a blankie but I do see that my daughter have become attached to those tags on anything, which stated how to wash/iron/care for the said thing. She wants to constantly put it in her mouth of play with it with her fingers.

  • My 2 year old has a blankie that he adores. UNfortunately, the company that made it went out of business (after making that same blanket since the 60s… I know, I googled it). so, now we have a nasty thing that he sucks the corners on and no way to replace it. Ugh!
