The Birth Of A Blog

E: I’m a mom. I’ve given birth. I know (all too well) what labor pains feel like. And let me tell you… this– as in, this BLOG– has definitely been a labor… of love.

T: I’m a mom. I’m also a blogger and a social media lover. Somedays I like one role better than the other, but both are huge pieces of who I am. So it only made sense to spread my wings and branch out a bit. Heck, I had two kids, so I figured why not have two (which is now three) blogs. And no, that doesn’t mean I need one more child to even out the count.

Let me tell you how it all began. It started with an email– two bloggers looking to find a new way to reach out to the wide, wide world that is the blogosphere. Except nobody told us to look both ways before we crossed the street.

It’s funny when you feel so connected to someone you’ve never met. It’s quite possible I could pass Elizabeth on the street and not know it was her. Yet the second we started connecting through our blogs, there was a friendship and it didn’t matter that we lived far from each other.

About a gazillion emails and a dozen cross-country, marathon phone calls later (anybody else ever had the pleasure of speaking on the phone to a friend you met on a blog? It’s a surreal experience), the idea was born. Actually a few ideas were born.

The first idea was to come up with a name for our new creation. Have you tried to purchase a domain name lately?! It’s hard to come up with a name that isn’t already taken. Once we settled on a name, we started thinking about the details of the site. After a few brainstorming sessions, we had a few ideas of what the missions of the site should be.

But none of those ideas seemed to work. We wanted something beyond just amazing content (which, if you’ve checked out our list of Resident Experts, you know is truly incredible); we wanted a place where women (and yes, a dad or two!) could go to meet ALL their blogging needs.

We all have one thing in common: we are bloggers. Additionally, many of us are moms, so we knew the site should incorporate both themes. Even if someone is not a “mommy blogger,” the site needed to be a place where people could read about both blogging and motherhood. Identify with other moms/parents, learn about new opportunities within the bloghood, and feel a sense of connection. It also needed to be a place where we could all be real and read/comment about things that we enjoy outside of mommyhood, such as fashion, media, and fun.

A few contractions later (like late night chat sessions that killed my phone, or massive freakouts over exactly how to get just the right look for our space), and that’s how “Our Mommyhood” was born.

Since I have two kids, I’ve experienced both a long and short labor. Yes, the short one was much easier, but the long one was much more rewarding. Putting in the extra work to keep up my stamina, determination, and focus was no easy task. And the same goes for this site. It was a long process to get here, but we’re here….and now you are, too!
